Redness & Skin Sensitivity

Rosacea and other redness or sensitivity in the skin can be caused by a combination of factors, and while the exact cause isn't fully understood, there are several key contributors.

Genetics

A family history of rosacea can make you more prone to developing it. Certain genetic factors can affect how your skin reacts to environmental triggers.

Environmental Triggers

Various external factors can trigger or worsen redness and irritation. These can include:

  • Sun exposure: UV rays can irritate sensitive skin.

  • Temperature extremes: Both heat and cold can cause flare-ups.

  • Wind: It can dry out skin, leading to more redness.

  • Spicy foods: These can trigger blood vessels to dilate, leading to redness.

Skin Sensitivity

Some people's skin is naturally more sensitive, leading to reactions like redness or burning, even to products that wouldn't normally irritate others.

Immune System Response

Some researchers believe that rosacea could be related to an overactive immune system, where the body mistakenly inflames blood vessels in the skin.

Microbial Factors

A type of bacteria called Demodex mites, which are found on the skin, might contribute to rosacea in some people. These mites can irritate the skin or trigger an immune response.

Hormones

Hormonal changes, particularly in women, might play a role, which is why rosacea often appears during the 30s-50s and may worsen around menopause.

Certain Medications or Skin Products

Some medications, especially steroids, and harsh skin care products can contribute to skin redness or trigger rosacea-like symptoms.

Managing triggers, using gentle skin care, and avoiding known irritants can help minimise flare-ups. If you're struggling with redness, a dermatologist can diagnose and prescribe medications to manage the condition.

Rosacea Treatment

Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, dermatitis or other skin problems.

There's no cure for rosacea. But you may be able to control it with medicine, gentle skin care and avoiding things that cause flare-ups.

We here at Cosmetics By Briony offer a treatment for rosacea, particularly for the flushing and redness that often come with it. The treatment works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause blood vessels to dilate. This can help reduce the appearance of redness and prevent those facial flushing episodes that many people with rosacea experience.

Here’s how it works:

  • The treatment is injected into specific areas of the face where blood vessels are overactive, which helps to minimise redness and the intensity of flushing.

  • It can also help with symptoms like burning and stinging sensations that people with rosacea sometimes feel.

Although there isn't a cure for rosacea, some people do see significant improvement in their symptoms, with results lasting around 3-4 months before needing another treatment.

That said, it’s not for everyone, and it’s important to talk to a dermatologist to see if it’s a suitable option for your specific case of rosacea.

These products can be beneficial for people with rosacea or other redness-prone skin, but it’s always a good idea to patch-test new products and talk to a dermatologist before introducing them into your routine, especially if your skin is highly sensitive.

Skin needling (also known as micro-needling)

Can be a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to rosacea. The procedure involves tiny needles that create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and encouraging skin regeneration. While it can be beneficial for improving skin texture, reducing scars, and boosting overall skin health, it can be tricky with rosacea for a couple of reasons.

Improving Skin Texture

If you have rosacea-related scarring (like thickened skin or textural irregularities), microneedling might help improve the appearance of scars over time.

Collagen Stimulation

Microneedling can stimulate collagen production, which might help strengthen the skin and improve its overall resilience, potentially helping with skin barrier function and reducing sensitivity in the long run.

PHA Resurfacing Peel Treatment

A gentle resurfacing peel for smoother and more glowing skin.

This gentle dual-action PHA peel utilises Gluconolactone to gently exfoliate, moisturise, plump and cleanse surface impurities to reduce the appearance of fine lines and uneven skin tone. Sodium Hyaluronate & Panthenol calm & soothe while reinforcing the skin’s natural barrier. This results in an improvement in the appearance of dehydrated, dull & coarse skin texture.

Key concerns: Dryness & dehydration, sensitivity & redness.

IPL Vascular Correction Treatment

IPL Vascular Correction occurs when Hemoglobin absorbs the light emitted by the IPL wavelength. It causes heat damage and the vessels collapse or close. The body's natural healing process works to gradually clear the damaged vessels.
