What are some of the causes of hair loss in men and women?

Genetics (Androgenetic Alopecia)
This is the most common cause of hair thinning for both men and women, often referred to as male-pattern baldness and female-pattern hair loss. It’s hereditary and typically results in thinning at the crown or receding hairline in men and diffuse thinning across the scalp in women. It tends to be more noticeable in men, leading to receding hairlines and bald patches.

In women, it usually results in overall thinning, especially around the crown, but doesn’t often lead to full baldness.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Lack of key nutrients like iron, vitamin D, biotin, zinc, and protein can affect hair growth. A poor diet or underlying conditions like anemia can lead to thinning or shedding hair.

Stress, restrictive diets, or eating disorders can also cause nutritional deficiencies that may result in hair thinning.

Stress
Both physical and emotional stress can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium, where a larger-than-normal number of hairs enter the shedding (telogen) phase of the hair growth cycle.

Major life stressors, surgery, or illness can induce this kind of shedding, but it’s often temporary and hair may grow back once the stressor is addressed.

Medical Conditions
Conditions like thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism), autoimmune diseases (like lupus or alopecia areata), diabetes, and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) can all contribute to hair thinning or loss. Scalp conditions like dandruff, fungal infections, or seborrheic dermatitis can cause localized hair thinning due to inflammation.

Medications and Treatments
Certain medications, including those used for high blood pressure, depression, arthritis, and chemotherapy, can cause hair loss as a side effect. Birth control pills can also affect hair growth due to their hormonal impact.

Age
As people age, hair growth naturally slows down. The hair follicles may shrink, and the hair becomes finer, resulting in thinning. Men typically experience more significant hair loss as they age, while women may notice it in their 40s or 50s, particularly after menopause.

Excessive Hair Styling or Damage
Frequent use of heat styling tools (flat irons, blow dryers), tight hairstyles (like ponytails or braids), or chemical treatments (colouring, perming) can damage the hair and lead to breakage and thinning. Over-brushing or harsh handling of hair can also contribute to this.

Men

Women

Pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are major factors. Hormonal shifts during these times can cause temporary or permanent hair loss. For example, many women experience hair shedding after childbirth (postpartum hair loss), and the drop in estrogen during menopause can lead to thinning.

Male hormones (androgens) can also impact hair growth. Conditions like an overproduction of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, can contribute to hair loss in men.
